Questions Worth Asking Any Telehealth Doctor

The best patients are not the most agreeable ones — they are the most informed. Asking good questions is not rudeness or distrust; it is exactly how you are meant to engage with your own care, and any practitioner worth seeing will welcome it. A handful of questions also tells you a great deal about the quality of the service you are dealing with.

Start with the person. Are you registered with Ahpra, and what is your registration type? You can verify the answer yourself on the public register, and a good clinician will happily point you to it. Knowing who you are speaking with is the foundation of everything else.

Ask about the assessment itself. How will you decide what is appropriate for me? A considered answer describes a genuine clinical process — history, examination of the picture, weighing options. An answer that sounds like a foregone conclusion is a signal to slow down. A consultation should feel like an assessment, not a formality.

Ask about continuity. Will my usual GP be kept informed, with my consent? Joined-up care is safer care, and a practitioner who values it is a good sign. Ask what happens next, too — how follow-up works, how to reach someone if something changes, and what the plan is if the first approach is not the right one.

Ask about cost before anything begins, so there are no surprises. And ask about your information — what is collected, how it is protected, and where the privacy policy is.

None of these questions require any medical knowledge to ask, and all of them are reasonable. A service that answers them clearly and without defensiveness is showing you something important about how it works.
